Question 7
Looking back on your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Initially, we all had a very basic understanding of the different types of shots and their effect, however as we progressed through the making of our film, we were able to see and understand better the differences with each shot and how they influence the audience. During the process of making our film, we decided to research different films in order to see their effect on the audience and their effect with different types of shots and different scores. When we came to sorting our score we initially struggled as music we picked for one piece that sounded fitting, actually didn’t when we came to watch the whole thing back. Because of this, for each score we found, we played all of our film to decide where it should go, in order to keep the film in synchronisation with the rest.
As a group, we decided on the different types of shots we used by discussing how they would effect the audience and how this would benefit us. In the end, we picked the camera angles and shots we felt would not only fit our genre but also fit the film and put across the effect we wanted to achieve. From the preliminary task, we have not only improved our film greatly but we have also improved our knowledge of film making. In making the full product, we did make several mistakes in filming and post production techniques. However, once we spotted these mistakes, we repeated the filming process but this time, our filming skills were much improved and able to create a much better final product. We found that in our initially attempt at creating our film, we rushed into it and had not planned enough to create a worthy final piece. By recognising our mistakes through the film, we knew we had to plan more carefully and make changes to the filming process to improve.
In the process of creating the score, we thought of different ways in which we could have created the right score to fit out film. We initially tried to create a score from garage band that we thought could fit, unfortunately, it wasn’t right for our film. Luckily, we found a worthy score on a website that appeared much more fitting for our film. Once we added different scores we found each one changed the effect of our film and how it would portray our characters to the audience. In order to find the right one, we had to play different scores with the film until it had the right effect. We also found that incorporating different scores together made a great difference to character representation and so we now have different scores for our characters to represent the protagonist and antagonist.
Not only with the score and camera shots, by researching different films, we found what costumes would be sufficient for each of our characters. By looking at other characters in other films we saw a significant difference in the costumes of the antagonist and protagonist. In this way, we specifically chose costumes for our characters that not only fit their characteristics but also the plot.
The preliminary task has allowed us to progress and improve our skills of film making with our analysis of the shots we used in this task we were able to see how to improve that and include these better shots in our final product. Our progression through out the year has clearly been shown in the difference of our preliminary task and our final product. Although they were different types of film, our general shot types etc have greatly improved.
