Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?
When we created our film our most effective way of creating an attractive product was the audience’s involvement in the film. We achieved an approachable and relatable film through the use of different social groups. For example, the two teenagers are just walking through the park, allowing this to be generally relatable, this certain setting helped create an identifiable aura around our film. The Mise en Scene was a key area in our film; this is because of the identifiable and relatable costumes we used for both Adam and Seamus (our protagonists) which were both very casual clothing.
One method of creating an attractive film was the audience focus group and feed-back. We felt that if we interviewed a group of our target audience we could get good feed-back on how to improve our film and make it more enticing. The comments we got (mainly to add a varied selection of shots to increase the pace of the narrative) helped us to apply certain changes that needed to be added to our film. This focus group consisted of a group of teenage males who attend our school; this was the exact social group that we wanted to base our film around. One, because every character in our film is male and two, the age group of our characters is predominantly from 16-18. Some of the comments we got on our film from our peers was that the plot wasn’t as strong as it could be, for example, most of the group interviewed felt that our film contained too many long shots, an area which with have made a marked improvement on. The score which we created on garage band was also an area that our peers felt could be improved on. We took this advice into hand and changed the programme from which we got our score (garage band to Looper-man). This use of audience interaction was our main method of attracting a teenage audience.
Our Thrillers website was another key element of addressing our audience. This site gives an in depth plot of our thriller, helping our target audience understand the narrative a little more. The site also includes a costume page, recce report, blog etc.., which helped keep the target audience informed about the progress of our films production.
One piece of advice we often stumbled upon was to add in a lot more post-production (effects, intriguing titles etc..). The reasoning behind this comment was primarily to add in more suspense and when we applied these changes we soon realised why the comments were made. One effect used is the earthquake effect; this creates a shaking on screen, blurring our antagonists face helping to add a sense of mystery to his character.
One element of our production (as explained briefly before) that was appropriate for our target audience was the mise en scene. Not only were the costumes appropriate, but the whole theme of the film. This helped create an ambiguous representation toward the teenage social group, one because our film highlights a stereo-type that is often present in the media industry (anti-social behavious), this is portrayed in the first scene where we see our two protagonists in detention, planning a truancy for the next day. The reason I describe this as ambiguous is because the next scene highlights the innocence behind our characters personas, the nervous antics of the protagonists' characters create a sympathetic and identifiable persona that the audience can relate with.
